Brickmaking became a large-scale industry in the 1870's when a building boom created great demand for brick, and the local clay of St. Peters was ideal for brickmaking. The brickfields have now become a large park and these silhouetted chimneys from the old brickworks have been left in situ along with some machinery from the period.

Local sculptor and artist Michael Snape's metal pieces are well known throughout the city. This piece is the front fence of an industrial unit and is a poem written by Snape cut into a sheet of steel eight metres long. The poem is entitled "The Balmain Traffic Song" and can be read

The building on the left is the Horizon Apartments designed by the late Harry Seidler in the mid 1990's. Although an award winning building and designed by an renowned architect credited with making a major contribution to the architecture of Sydney, owners complain of space issues and noise problems which has led to court cases against the builders and developers.

This heritage listed 1960's former hotel has been converted into an apartment block. The circular building featured in the 2002 Australian crime comedy "Dirty Deeds" starring John Goodman and Bryan Brown.

The Sailors Home was built in 1864 to provide inexpensive and comfortable lodging to sailors. It was in operation until 1970. It is now a tourist information centre and restaurant.

The word "careening" refers to a technique of putting ships as far up a bay as possible so that when the tide goes out they are left dry and work can be undertaken on the hull.

The headquarters and warehouse of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company was built in 1884. With its distinctive Dutch gables and bell tower it has long been regarded as a significant Sydney landmark.
