The Sydney Solar Sailor is the world's first hybrid solar-electric, wind powered passenger vessel. The movable wing-like solar panels on the roof act as sails. On bad weather days it can run on batteries or LPG. It produces very little noise, fumes, vibration, wash or air pollution and no water pollution. The Sydney based company are currently building larger craft to operate as tourist ferries in San Francisco Bay.

Kings Cross, Thursday September 28th 2006.
The neon Coca Cola sign on the right is heritage listed and costs the advertiser $1 million a year for rental. The building behind is being converted from a hotel into apartments. This type of conversion is typical of the Cross at the moment. The neighbourhood is transitioning from a bohemian hangout and tourist destination to a somewhat seedy residential precinct.

Sydney Harbour's life as a working harbour is coming to an end. Behind this passenger ferry is almost all that remains of stevedoring operations in Sydney. Container shipping operations will be moved to ports south of Sydney and this area will be redeveloped over the next few years into a mix of residential and leisure facilities. I have a panorama shot of this area from a different angle to view
here.

Queen Victoria Building, George Street, Tuesday September 26th 2006.
The site on which the QVB stands was originally the first Sydney markets and was selected for the construction of a grand government building, intended to employ skilled craftsmen out of work during a severe recession. It was completed in 1898. The building steadily deteriorated and as recently as 1959 it was threatened with demolition. During the 1970s it was restored and is now home to a wide variety of mostly upmarket boutiques and brand-name shops.
