On this day in 1770 His Majesty's Bark Endeavour, commanded by Lt. James Cook (later Captain), made first landfall on the Australian continent at a place now known as Botany Bay just south of Sydney. This area was deemed suitable for situating a settlement and British Colonial outpost which occurred eighteen years later with the arrival of the First Fleet. This bronze statue of Cook was erected in 1879.

Brooklyn Cemetery, Wednesday 25th April 2007.
No one is sure who actually shot down The Red Baron in April 1918 but Robert Buie claims to have done so and even has it etched on his headstone. He died 43 years ago on this day, Anzac Day , the day when Australia commemorates the anniversary of the tragic Gallipoli landings of 1915. You can read about Robert Buie here.
