There are two firework shows in Sydney on New Years Eve. This is the 9.00 show for families and later at midnight is the main event with a spectacular fireworks show dubbed a Diamond Night in the Emerald City, with the event also ringing in the anniversary of the Harbour Bridge, which celebrates its 75th birthday in 2007. Over a million people are expected to view them at vantage points all over the city. I would like to wish all my visitors a very happy New Year.

Hyde Park Barracks, Thursday December 28th 2006.
Hyde Park Barracks, built in 1817-1819 to house male convicts, was adapted in 1848 as an Immigration Depot for unaccompanied female migrants. Many of these women and girls were refugees from the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1848. This is a memorial to the Famine and lists 400 girls orphaned by it.
